Sowing Seeds
Late fall through early spring is the best time to sow the seeds of many of the native wildflowers that support birds, bees, and other wildlife.
Growing plants from seeds can help plants adapt to changing environmental conditions and is much less expensive than purchasing plants.
Here are some tips to get seeds growing:
The easiest way to germinate native seeds is to sow them outdoors, the best time varies by species so do some research before starting. Many seeds started in the fall garden bed emerge as hardy spring seedlings.
Species like milkweed need to overwinter to experience cold stratification, which freezes and expands the outer shell and aids in germination.
Cover the area with mulch to protect seeds.
